Paul Stead at The Rolleston Arms, Swindon. Friday 23/08/2024.

The start of the Bank Holiday weekend kicked off with a small, intimate solo gig by Paul Stead from The Darker My Horizon band. The evening was 2 hours of Paul playing his way through some of the back catalogue of tracks from the band, in an acoustic set and throwing in some cover versions for good measure.

Paul began his set early, after some of the local regulars asked if he would give them something to sing along to. Happy to oblige, Paul took to the stage for a crowd pleasing rendition of the Guns N Roses classic Sweet Child O’ Mine.

Next up, Paul played a couple of tracks from the No Superhero album which, in a laid back stripped bare setting, highlighted Paul’s powerful vocal talent to the full.

As Paul had already played Sweet Child O’ Mine it threw his set list slightly off so he introduced us to a song which is to feature on the next The Darker My Horizon album. The track is called Incredible and if this track is anything to go by, then the new album will definitely be worth pre-ordering.

The first half of the evening continued with a selection of tracks from the Acquiesce album, The Phoenix Vol 2 EP and Paul’s take on Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer and Bryan Adams’ Summer Of ’69. This allowed the small audience a chance to have another sing-a-long.

The second half of the evening showcased some of Paul’s favourite tracks from The Darker My Horizon, before paying his own homage to the late Bernie Marsden, with a rendition of Whitesnake’s Here I Go Again.

It may have been a small crowd in an intimate setting but Paul delivered an outstanding performance, showing an insight into the more vulnerable side of the songs in this acoustic style.

Paul will be out on the road with the rest of The Darker My Horizon boys throughout the year, so if you get the opportunity to see them, definitely make the most of the chance.

The Darker My Horizon are also appearing at HRH 17 in Great Yarmouth in November, where Paul has said he will be doing an acoustic set as well, which will be something to look forward to.
